We have been here 5 generations, building this beautiful huge community family. Now is time to share our Linda Vista Family!
Our children are our future. They are growing more everyday and we want to set up programs and activities that helps them grow the best ways possible. We want to make sure we water their roots with creativity, good energy, knowledge of self, healing, self-esteem, tutoring, good healthy eating, healthy habits and so much more.
The Linda Vista Family Foundation was started in 1985 by a group of community members who recognized the need for a local organization dedicated to helping individuals in need like a huge family. Since then, we have grown into starting up a thriving nonprofit, serving hundreds of individuals each year.
The Linda Vista Family exists to build and maintain a family tight unity in our community. We are like a family where each one teaches one in hopes to reach one. We are here to create lasting solutions to poverty, mental health, drug addiction, gang banging, social injustice and other domestic issues. To serve individuals and families in a less fortunate position. Creating a sharing caring community unity through genuine community service.
They say "It Takes A Village" and The Linda Vista Family are the village people providing hand ups and help outs leaving no family members left behind.
The Linda Vista Family has been around since the 1941 housing boom 3000 houses 300 jobs. This big town boom started the once upon when our great grandparents met each other and their kids met and made our parents then we made our kids and now our kids are making futures. It is really important to empower and entertain our elders. We want them to know we appreciate their sacrifice in our story we want to know our history straight from the OGs. We want to make programs that shine the light on our elder hometown heroes and create activities for them that can leave us amazing community family memories.
Back in 1982 the founder of Kushinda African Drum & Dance Troupe Azaam Appling AKA Brother Butch started a small drum circle playing bongos and met an African brother named Ibu from Senegal. Ibu started teaching Brother Butch Senegalese Drum and eventually Senegalese Dance as well. By 1992 Brother Butch had purchased African Drums and taught drum playing to the Linda Vista Family and started up class every Thursday night at the LV Rec. We got a teacher from Linda Vista that had learned across town with the Bomani Drum & Dance class. Our class became almost church to the family and visitors and each one teach one movement began. We will continue to pass along our history through drum & dance. We are making a video that we can watch with our kids learn and teach our kids and they can show their kids and Kushinda will never fade away. We are also opening classes back up this year!
We will be giving our creative community the tools to express their creativity. We will be setting up programs for all ages for our families artists, painters, sculptors, graffiti artists, sketch artists, digital artists, photographers, producers, musicians, dancers, actors, writers, singers, rappers, beat boxers and so much more.. This will help cultivate the communities creative bond that can sprout out successful artists that will represent Linda Vista Family in an amazing way and make our mothers proud
We have been working hard out here to putting food on the table, roofs over our heads, lights on in the house, gas in the cars, clothes on our backs and shoes on our feet, and we deserve to celebrate when life gives us a moment. We are here and we love to party in honor of our family's highlights & accomplishments. We also like to come together to help lift our family through lifes trials & tribulations through dinner food family love, music and good vibes. We will throw more concerts and events made to create smiles, positivity, and amazing lv family memories.
Back in 1990 we started to bring Linda Vista Families and young adults up to the Redwoods to get an amazing unforgettable experience to share amongst one another and tell their future family. Everyone gets a small sample of how powerful God is and how big this world truly is. They get to see how much bigger this world is besides, just Linda Vista, San Diego, or even besides California one day. It is extremely humbling being able to surrounded by these humongous trees that are marvelous. This and other activities and the connections that they get with the Earth and connect with their camp mates will positively impact their lives. A nice chunk of the kids that we took to the woods have grown out to be some upstanding young men and women. Their minds have been expanded for further than just these concrete jungles we see every day in the normal, setting in the city. They appreciate the hometown more for its civilization, but they will never forget or regret the experience he had in the redwoods. We are going to start heading the community youth at least once a year soon.
" We all loved Melinda, and we all know how much the reunion meant to her. As soon as one was finished, she was thinking about how to make the next year better. She always loved the LV community and felt enormous pride each year that we were able to bring everyone together without it being for a funeral and also to donate thousands of dollars to the youth programs at the rec. center."
Lori Appling-Walker
The Linda Vista reunion started off as "Reggae On The Hill" in Linda Vista where we bring the vibe from reggae on the river in Humboldt County to Linda Vista. Mr.Appling would bring big named bands out to Linda Vista. Melinda picked it up after her husband passed away and turned it into a Linda Vista family reunion. We’re all of the people that grew up in the Linda Vista since 1941 came together at his one time a year without somebody having to die to bring them back together. Multi, cultural fairs are LV once a years as well and Kushinda is always the highlight closing the fair, and Linda Vista and our reunion is another one that brings us all together. So they get to see when we have our reunion that wood now looks like. versus what it look like back then with all the races together hanging out and like we’re family everybody all the same it is really a beautiful grass that should be celebrated at least once a year, we like to show off our talents and have our superstar show up. Not only is it a talent show for the neighborhood people can come out and display their items set up, moves in display their art and creativity and their passions. Together we watch our families intertwine with each other, and we really become family. We watch our grandparents interact with us and our kids. It is really a beautiful thing to see us all get together at least once a year without sadness just celebrating in honor of all of our family that can’t make it or that we lost.
Butch and Melinda were very proud of being from Linda Vista. Both of them came from big families that experienced minority issues growing up in the visit in the 50s and 60s. MelindA’s father was in the military and so was Butch’s grandfather. Melinda and Butch Appling were Linda Vista sweethearts that hooked up at a Linda Vista party and have been together since. Melinda and Butch Appling were a nice chunk of kids in Linda Vistas mom and pop. They always had a open arms, open door with open ears. They always had the best advice for anyones questions. They had challenging times that lead them to reach back and turn their negatives into positives with a compassionate heart to community that needed mother and father figures. They showed the community that there is always the light at the end of the tunnel and as long as you are taking steps towards the light you will get to the light showing you a bright beautiful and blessed reality you worked to get there. When they passed on many were sadden and many inspired. One thing for sure is their light will shine forever and their love will never die.
We are stronger together. This is just the beginning for the Linda Vista family foundation. Now we have a chance to do more with more funding. Together we can stay lifting our community family regardless if we still stay in Linda Vista or not our family will always be family. We can keep remembering and paying homage to those that how to make us who we are today and spreading the love and Legacy of all of our loved ones. If you have somebody you would like to immortalize from Linda Vista please contact us and we can do something to honor their memory please reach out, set up a program to keep their memory alive.
The founder is Sukari Appling from Linda Vista. She is the oldest daughter of Melinda and Butch Appling. She is a sweetheart that aims to be like her mom and dad. She has been involved in her community service since Jr.High. She was a student turned African drum and dance teacher, as well as A Linda Vista Leader when she went to Montgomery Jr. High, and Peer Counseling President in Kearny High. She always wanted to do community service and help others like her mother and father. After her father passed away in 2008 she went and started back up Kushinda Drum & Dance to honor her father. She got into a horrible car accident, she could not teach the dance lessons anymore but her niece stepped up and kept the classes up. She asked her mother what she wanted her to do in her name since this time she knew her mother was passing away and her mom told her to continue her legacy doing community service in Linda Vista. Since that day that’s what she does now to keep her mothers and fathers memory alive. The month after her mother passed away in 2012 started the Holiday gift drive. Being the daughter of some community activists left her craving to fill the shoes of giants. They did a lot, so much she knows It is going to take a whole community non profit to start to pour back into our communities family.
